It is with sad news to report that our good friend and legend in the cannabis industry, Nol Van Schaik has suddenly passed away in his sleep at home in Spain at the age of 65.
Nol has been a dominant figure in the cannabis industry for many years, helping fight for legalisation and setting up many protests to fight for our freedom to enjoy cannabis as intended. He also successfully ran 3 Willie Wortel coffeeshops in the city of Haarlem and set up 1 of the first CBD Stores named Hemp Dispensary. Nol also played a major part in connecting all of the Haarlem coffeeshops by setting up Team Haarlem Coffeeshops (THC) which united all of the coffeeshops in the city and all received a hallmark from the municipality, which Nol was very proud of.
Back in 2001 Nol and his good friend Colin Davies set up a coffeeshop in Southport in England named “The Dutch Experience” in a bid to test the cannabis laws in the UK. The idea wasn’t to keep the plans quiet, but instead inform the police and press of their intentions. A senior police officer even visited the night before and said he was impressed with how it had been set up and that they would be there when it opened, just to monitor the situation. Things didn’t run smoothly and immediately police were taking names of all involved and soon after arrested Colin. Later Nol was arrested at his hotel after the police told the staff to report Nol if they could smell cannabis coming from his room. The protests continued outside of building and also right in front of the police station which Colin was locked up in. You can check a video of the experience below.
Nol also played a major part in helping get rid of the Weed Pass that threatened all of the coffeeshops in the Netherlands. The idea was to sell to residents only, meaning tourists would not be allowed to purchase their weed. Back in 2012 Nol helped set up a major protest in Amsterdam against the wiet-pass (Weed Pass) and it was a big success. Thanks to Nol, Peter Lunk and their many colleagues, the weed pass was successfully defeated.
We would like to offer Nol’s family, colleagues and many friends our deepest condolences at this sad time.
Rest In Peace Nol Van Schaik 1954 - 2019
